Postcards from Latin America

Introduction

September 2003 - October 2004

It wasn't meant to be a world tour: it just happened that way. I wanted to see Cuba before Castro died, and Cathie wanted to write a Caribbean cook book. From there it kinda spiralled out of control.

Donning our backpacks again, and armed with only a smattering of Spanish, this is the story of our six-month adventure through Latin America (with a few weeks visiting family and friends in the New Zealand and Australia) that grew to become a 13-month odyssey, taking in China and south-east Asia, too.

This time there were two of us: smoking Cuban cigars in Havana and chewing Bolivian coco leaves in Potosi's silver mines, from the isolated tropical shores of Easter Island to the snow-capped peaks of the Tibetan plateau. Older and wiser, we relished each challenge thrown at us daily.

…and Cathie still hasn't written that cook book.
